Artery (Arteries)

  In our body, the Arteries (Artery), in our Arterial System (Arterial Blood System), are thick-walled vessels that carry blood away from the heart as part of the higher-pressure portion of the circulatory system.

In our body, except for the pulmonary arteries, all Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the tissues that require oxygen.

“Aorta”  
  In our body's vascular system, the Aorta, a systemic artery, and our largest diameter and thickest walled artery, is the main trunk that distributes oxygenated blood to all parts of the body through systemic circulation.

In our body, all systemic arteries are branches of the Aorta, either direct or indirect.
  In our body's vascular system, the Aorta is the main trunk of the systemic arteries carrying oxygenated blood, that originates by ascending from the left ventricle of the heart, curving posteriorly and to the left, then descending through the thorax and abdomen, where it branches off into two smaller arteries the (right and left) common iliac arteries.

In our body, the geography of the Aorta divides it into three portions: ascending aorta, aortic arch (arch of aorta), and descending aorta.

The descending aorta is further subdivided into the thoracic arota and Abdominal Aorta.

  In our body's lower limb (lower extremity), the Popliteal Artery is a continuation of the femoral artery coursing through the popliteal fossa.

Popliteal Artery Branches

  In our body, the Popliteal Artery divides into the anterior and posterior Tibial Arteries. In our body's arterial blood system, the artery, in the leg, the Popliteal Artery is the extension of the "superficial" femoral artery after passing through the adductor canal and adductor hiatus above the knee. The termination of the Popliteal Artery is its bifurcation of the tibial arteries into the anterior tibial artery and posterior tibial artery.

The branches of the Popliteal Artery are: Anterior Tibial Artery, Posterior Tibial Artery, Sural Artery, Medial Superior Genicular Artery, Lateral Superior Genicular Artery, Middle Genicular Artery, Lateral Inferior Genicular Artery, Medial Inferior Genicular Artery.
